Not able to allocate more faces (crash) - but you have gigabytes of free ram

Windows 32 can only address 1.3GB inside any given process. This includes whatever overhead you have for max. To make use of the rest of your ram, you will need to adda /3GB flag to your boot.ini file. To edit the boot.ini, you first need to see it.

Go to c: and under tools->folder options->view you need to uncheck 'hide protected operating system files', and check 'show hidden files'. (note : you'll want to restore those options after your edit). Open up boot.ini and add the flag (sample below):

 [boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect /3GB

Save out the file and reboot.

When max loading the message "Access denied : disable UAC if you running under Vista" pops up and LBrush plug-in does not load

Windows Vista has the built-in ability to automatically reduce the potential of security breeches in the system. It does that by automatically enabling a feature called User Account Control (or UAC for short). The UAC forces users that are part of the local administrators group to run like they were regular users with no administrative privileges.

Solution: disable UAC to run max having administrative privileges.

  1. Launch MSCONFIG by from the Run menu.

  2. Click on the Tools tab. Scroll down till you find "Disable UAP" (this should probably change to UAC in next Vista beta builds and in the RTM version). Click on that line.

  3. Press the Launch button.

  4. A CMD window will open. When the command is done, you can close the window.

  5. Close MSCONFIG. You need to reboot the computer for changes to apply.

x64 Windows Vista or XP performs some automatic redirection when installing or linking Dynamic Link Libraries. So Wintab32.dll might have been placed in WINDOWS/System32 but into WINDOWS/SysWOW64 and Dynamic Linking System does not find it.

Solution: Place a copy of 32 bit Wintab32.dll into WINDOWS/System32 directory.
